Information to help students sign up for the correct math course
Registration for next year will begin in the next few weeks. To assist students in signing up for the appropriate math course, the math department has created the following guidelines. Students and parents are encouraged to review these guidlines in deciding the appropriate math course(s) for the 2009-2010 school year. A Math Course Progression Flow Chart is the Latest News section on the homepage.
1. If a student is in Algebra IB, the student should sign up for Geometry A/B. ONLY those students in Algebra IB who have a high A (95 or above) should consider signing up for Geometry Crunch.
2. If a student is in Algebra I Crunch and makes an A or B, they are to sign up for Geometry Crunch. If a student is in Algebra I Crunch and makes a C or D, they are to sign up for Geometry A/B.
3. If a 10th grade student is in Geometry B, that student should sign up for Algebraic Connections. ONLY those students in Geometry B who had a high A (95 or above) in Algebra IA/IB and a high A in Geometry A/B should consider signing up for Honors Algebra II with Trigonometry.
4. If an 11th grade student is in Geometry B and intends on going to post-secondary school, that student should sign up for Algebra II. If an 11th grade student in Geometry B has not passed the AHSGE, they should sign up for Algebraic Connections. (Keep in mind that Algebra II is a dead end course and therefore only seniors may sign up for that course.)
5. If a student is in Geometry Crunch and makes an A or B, they are to sign up for Honors Algebra II with Trigonometry. If a student is in Geometry Crunch and makes a C or D, they are to sign up for Algebraic Connections.
6. If an 11th grade student is in Algebraic Connections and intends on going to post-secondary school, they should sign up for Algebra II. ONLY those students who made an A in Algebraic Connections should consider signing up for Honors Algebra II with Trigonometry. (Keep in mind that Algebra II is a dead end course and therefore only seniors may sign up for that course.)
7. If a 10th grade student is in Honors Algebra II with Trigonometry, that student must sign up for Honors Precalculus. They may attempt to sign up for grade enhancement, but grade enhancement must be approved by the department chair. Students must have a valid reason for wanting to grade enhance a course.
8. If an 11th grade student is in Honors Algebra II with Trigonometry, that student has two options for their senior year. If they are a strong math student interested in a math or science related field, they are to sign up for Honors Precalculus. If they are not a strong math student or if they are not interested in pursuing a math or science related field, they are to sign up for Honors Discrete Mathematics. Keep in mind that Discrete Mathematics is a dead-end course. Any 11th grade student in Honors Algebra II with Trigonometry interested in taking AP Calculus AB senior year should sign up for both Honors Precalculus and AP Calculus AB.
9. All Honors Precalculus students have three options. Option #1: AP Statistics. Option #2: AP Calculus AB (2nd semester only). Option #3: AP Calculus AB and AP Calculus BC all year long. Students may take both AP Calculus and AP Statistics concurrently if they choose. Students wanting more information regarding these three options should see their Precalculus teacher.
