Striving for Excellence through the Quest for Knowledge

To Whom It May Concern:

My name is Nancy Alexander and I am the Baker High School PTSA President.  I am writing on behalf of Jane Lose, Special Education Transition Teacher.  She is working to renovate an existing Outdoor Classroom at Baker.  Her ultimate goal is to create a “simulated workplace” in the outdoor classroom.  She would like to have the kids produce enough to sell to the community.  As you can imagine she has many needs.  She has secured people to work on the electricity and water.  I’m hoping to help her obtain a storage building, the covering for the greenhouse, wood, soil, gravel and a few other items listed below.  I am writing to ask if you would be able to donate any of the items listed below.  Any donation big or small will make a huge difference for Ms. Lose Special Education Class.  Listed below are the items she is looking for as well as education/transition goals and activities she has planned once the classroom is up and running.

Educational/Transition Goals

1.      Provide students with transferable skills with the possibility of obtaining competitive, paid employment upon graduation in a variety of settings including sheltered workshops, landscaping businesses, and produce stands/grocery stores.

2.      Develop leisure skills that promote hand-eye coordination and improve range of motion for students with physical limitations.

3.      Develop skills needed to perform activities of daily living including meal planning – choosing recipes that utilize fruits and vegetables that are in season, cooking, and making healthy food choices.

4.      Develop “real world” mathematic and personal finance skills by determining the value of plants and produce grown in the garden which will be sold to the public depending on quantity as well as budgeting to maintain a thriving business.

5.      Demonstrate knowledge of plants, fruits and vegetables, and growing techniques.

1.      Students will assist teachers with the construction of two raised beds.

2.      Students will monitor and compare growth rate of vegetables grown in a soil garden and those grown in a hydroponic growing system.

3.      Students will harvest vegetables to be prepared in our Practical Home Skills class with the remaining, if any, to be offered up for sale to staff/faculty members.

4.      Students will monitor costs and determine price points to maintain the business.

5.      Students will utilize a time clock and monitor/record work hours.

Items to be grown include but are not limited to the following:  bok choy, herbs, broccoli, and lettuce.

Thank you in advance for any help you might be able to provide.  We are in need of these supplies as soon as possible so Ms. Lose can get started on this project.

If you are able to help in any way, my contact information is below.  I look forward to hearing from you.

Kindest Regards,

Nancy Alexander
